Reporter Seyi Rhodes and producer Daniel Bogado travel to the Dominican Republic to meet the boys desperate to make it as US Major League baseball players.
In a country where many are still very poor, baseball is one of the few routes out for young men. But the chance of making it is slim. And the cost of failure at 18 years old can be devastating.
Baseball is a national obsession in the Dominican Republic. This small Caribbean island was historically a Spanish sugar colony, but now baseball brings more money into the country than sugar. In recent years the country has become a baseball factory with almost twenty per cent of all professional players in the United States coming from the Dominican Republic.
